PREP & LINE COOK

This is a student position beginning April 20th- September 6th
The Prep Cook will assist in the preparation of food for our kitchen production with a career minded approach to entering a culinary field.  They will be responsible for strictly maintaining all health and safety standards set by public health regarding food safety for the public.  Other tasks will include but are not limited to:

  • Assist in the development of menu and service plans for the Erin Agricultural
    Fall Fair 2015
  • participate in planning and cooking at the Erin Summer Celebration Festival for the BIA
  • Participate in planning and cooking at the 2015 Erin Ribfest in conjunction with the Optimists Club of Erin
  • work collaboratively with other students and staff
  • provide exceptional customer service in a fast paced food and retail environment
  • show initiative  while wisely using strong problem solving skills in daily activities
  • assist Executive Chef with cooking demonstrations or other regional or cultural events such as Alton Mills Cuisine Art Festival

ACCOUNTABILITY: This student will be directly supervised daily by the Lead Line Cook in the kitchen and ultimately by the Executive Chef who will provide daily direct on-site culinary skills training.

Student will be expected to actively engage in both collaborative and independent learning goals which will be reviewed at least biweekly with the Executive Chef.

Each student will be required to take a Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps online course and Food Safety Handler Course with Public Health.  They will be trained on our workplace Health and Safety policies, meet our Health and Safety Rep and understand her role, and be provided with written material about the same.   If they are over 18, they will also be required to have their Smart Serve Certification.  First Aid & CPR is an asset.  

Educational Requirements:  Post Secondary Education in Culinary Arts Program, Culinary Management, Special Events Coordinator, Hospitality and Tourism - any of these areas of study relate to both the culinary aspects of this job and the customer service & community development focus on tourism and hospitality that will be required

SOCIAL MEDIA AND WEBSITE COORDINATOR

This student would be responsible for analyzing current social media used by our company and providing recommendations that would increase public social media and increase effective outreach to drive traffic, tourism and increase sales.  They will also do the following:

  • work directly with the Owner and marketing/website team to enhance website presence
  • create travel and tour pages for our website
  • research and implement retail e-commerce; teach the staff how to better use social media including Twitter, FB, Instagram etc. to increase sales
  • promote our partnerships and work in the community
  • work with Central Counties Tourism and the Owner to increase the effectiveness of marketing opportunities we have with our current membership
  • ensure we are using all opportunities to have a website presence with our current memberships and partners (OIMH, Dufflet, Retail vendors etc.) 
  • seek other opportunities to improve our website and social media presence to increase revenues and future growth opportunities
  • determine how we can coordinate cash registers with ordering system, install iPads in the kitchen and link two sites on calendars 

ACCOUNTABILITY: Student will be directly supervised daily by the Owner who will provide direct on-site skills based training on our computer and social media systems and provide direct feedback to the student about weekly goals. 

This position is suitable for a driven, self motivated student who can work independently and within a diverse and dynamic team in a fast paced progressive environment.  Weekly meetings with this student will occur to review accomplishments, progress and growth and to set priorities and weekly goals with measurable outcomes. 

It is mandatory at our workplace that every new employee prior to starting employment will take the now mandatory Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps online course (2 hrs)and a Food Safety Handler Course with Public Health.  They will be trained on our workplace Health and Safety policies, meet our Health and Safety Rep and understand her role, and be provided with written material about the same.   

This job will promote our initiative to increase tourism and traffic to our stores through the effective use of social media and our website.  It will also allow us to better advertise our company involvement in local festivals such as Summer Celebration, Erin Agricultural Fall Fair, Ribfest etc...

HISTORICAL TOUR GUIDE & RESEARCH ASSISTANT

This student will work directly with the Executive Chef/Owner to promote the history of Town of Erin by creating 30 minute culinary walking tours in the Village as a representative of our new The Mill Run Eatery.  They will also be responsible for but not limited to the following:

  • research and promote the history of the Village of Erin
  • collaboratively work with the Historical Society to research and develop integrated ways that our new Eatery can promote the history of the Village and attract tourism to the town
  • will be working with the Executive Chef to offer exciting culinary adventures in partnership with other businesses or nonprofit agencies in Town
  • establish 'partnership' guidelines for those businesses who will be approached to participate in partnership with The Friendly Chef Adventures as a stop on the Culinary Walking Tours
  • develop standard script for tour guide/s and pictures or resource binder
  • create website tour content for the Walking Tours
  • create promotional materials to be distributed at all upcoming festivals and community events including the Erin Agricultural Fall Fair 2015
  • work with the Historical Society representatives, librarian and Porcupine’s Quill staff to understand and document what is needed for our establishment’s goals

ACCOUNTABILITY: Student will be directly supervised daily by the Owner who will provide direct on-site skills based training on the history of the Village of Erin and we will also seek the Mentorship of the Historical Society and/or Tim Inkster who has already been helping our company with establishing a historical tribute to the history of the town at our newest location The Mill Run Eatery. 

A self-motivated, organized and determined learner is best suited to this position. You must be able to work independently and within a diverse team environment in a fast paced progressive environment.   

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: BA in either History or Social Sciences would provide knowledge on researching, public speaking skills, writing skills, and strong analytic, problem solving and creative skills all of which would be useful in this position.

CULINARY CLASS ASSISTANT

Student Position Summer 2015
This college or university student will take an active role in developing new cooking class programs, recipes, and marketing materials working closely with the Executive Chef.  Job duties will include but not be limited to:

  • collaborate with our website designers and marketing team to create and edit online promotion and registration of classes
  • assist in the development of therapeutic classes for children, youth, unemployed and seniors in our community
  • assist in seeking government funding opportunities to launch these therapeutic programs in 2015
  • assist the Owner in operationalizing new initiatives with the Erin Fire Department and/or the local public and high school to develop a Fire Safety partnership integrated with our culinary classes for youth
  • assist in running cooking classes throughout the summer of 2015 including set up, food prep, printing recipe handouts for clients etc..
  • other duties as assigned which may include retail customer service, registration for classes etc.  

ACCOUNTABILITY: This tudent will be directly supervised daily by the Executive Chef who will provide daily direct on-site culinary and social skills training and provide direct feedback to the student about specific weekly goals.    

This individual must demonstrate an ongoing and strong commitment to growth and learning and be capable of working both independently and collaboratively within a dynamic team setting.  We will meet weekly  to review the students progress and growth, set priorities and weekly goals with measurable outcomes, provide written and other resources for learning to the student and then follow up on their progress on goals

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor of Arts (psychology, sociology, social work) degree in process would assist with the social emotional and research aspects of this job, Hospitality and Tourism or culinary related education would provide skills regarding the cooking aspects of the job description.  

OTHER INFORMATION: This job will directly impact the potential provision of services in our community that our business can offer high risk youth, low income families or seniors and the unemployed by seeking to develop therapeutic cooking classes and finding sources for further funding of the same.  Our community is experiencing high rural population growth and our corporation wants to partner with agencies such as Wellington County Community Services to service disadvantaged people in our area and reduce crime while increasing public safety (such as fire prevention strategies)

The cooking class assistant will work with the Owner and the BIA to promote future classes and conduct a community needs assessment at all local festivals and events held this summer.
